Continue reading

Bookfair, publishing, and new category [Eng]

Hey there !

Those last days were crazy, so I take this time for giving you some news. I don’t know necessarily where to start, so let’s make a list:

  • Editorial blog : It turned out my blog became more and more involved in some specific topics, and sometimes I am wondering if there is still a place here for my personnal daily posts. It gets more professional but I still feel this blog will remain mine if I am able to keep this kind of post available. However, I see my blog more as an editorial project than ever ! There is now an e-mail adress if you want to contact me, and I updated the “About” page, so check this out 😉
  • National Bookfair of Paris: every year, I dream to go to the National Bookfair of Paris, THE place to be for those who want to meet their favorite authors, publishers, assisting to conference, getting autographs, discovering new books etc. I already went to the Bookfair of Brive, but this year will continue as good as it started : I will be at the National Bookfair of Paris with the greatest bookshop’s team of France and the publisher of Toni Morrison’s books in french, Editions 10-18.  It’s so crazy, and I just can’t wait to be there.

All started with Twitter, and now I will have my pass as an intern at this great event. One day, I will probably write an article about tips I find out, by and by. But let’s see how it goes first. I am superstitious, you know that.

  • Roots&Inspiration, new category ! I planned it for a long, long, long time.  I came up with a new bilingual project , “Roots&Inspiration” which will point out artistic and inspirational project of ethnic communities (so, not only afro, of course!) : through portraits of interesting and inspirationnal profiles, I hope to underline the diversity of creation and its several origins. Art, entrepreneurship, music, website…everything !So if you want to let me know your project, send me a mail to[at] If you feel that ethnic culture, origins and creation are part of your work, or if you have questions about it, ask me ! 🙂
  • Google’s innovation : I couldn’t end this post without talking about this new innovation. Google is seriously freaking me out: it literally realized an e-book, as a substitute to paper book, taking into consideration the important of the use (manner to hold a book, sliding pages).
Innovation is in this way to insert in people’s habits: like Facebook which became a part of our lifestyle, our habits concerning books are corresponding to a way of use. In France, and mainly in Europe, resistance to reader and tablet were sometimes justified by that, so Google’s e-book gets closer to our habits. Very interesting.

BOOKREVIEW Music & Comics

Everything came upon me when I ve been told that I had to turn my essay into a presentation of 10 minutes ! What a waste to reduce my thought on that matter. This the reason why I decided to present to you a piece of my work.

The representation of sounds is a real challenge that some comics succeed to deal with originality. When I picked this subject, I had in mind another act of reading, a different way to understand what atmosphere means in a book: I read those books in a perfect silence, in order to imagine what could appear from it. Let s begin !

TOTAL JAZZ, BLUTCH : An entire anthology about jazz ! Even if you dont pecularly like this kind of music, the artistic treatment of lines, music nites, from chaos to harmony, is amazing. Blutch gives a testimony about a black music which was considered like noisy, chaotic, and vulgar. With little comic scenes, the artist shows the diary life of musicians and of famous musicians , all the world around with dance and racism, etc.

The esthetic is near from simple drafts or sketches which perfectly fit with the jazz, a music of improvisation and vibes, where musician’s ego are in the roar of trumpet!

VOODOO CHILD THE LEGEND OF JIMI HENDRIX, Bill Sienkiewicz : Believe it or not, I do not know so well Hendrix s songs, so reading this biopraphy was a musical experience!, Very neutral, and this is probably why I read it with a  new eye. Here the artistic uses the color as a musicak pattern, purple, pink, blue all those hippie colors which remind Woodstock, but also red, yellow when it comes to Hendrix’s intimacy and childhood I simply LOVED IT. It seemed to me like a cinematic movie, with black background and colours exploding i n the middle, symoblic of a psychedelic trip in the mind of Jimi The text is extracted from Jimi’s diary It s exceptionnal, eletric guutar is vibrating through coloured lines, voices are escaping from those wild opened mouthes and we can almost hear the sound of the broken guitar on stage What could I say ?

BLACKFACE BANJO, Frantz Duchazeau : Cartoon style for this last amazing piece ! It reminded me mute movies in black and white. My librarian had sparkled eyes when he talked about Duchazeau,s work. I deeply recommad it. Iwon t tell you the story because I think you will win to discover it. However, the graphim is as poetic as cartoon. Everything seems smiling and joyful at the same time, at the utmost point that faces of characters seem to be the music. Here you will discover als a piece of history with the ministrel show. when white comedians used blackface in order to play racist shows. Enjoy !

Bonne lecture

P.S: those are esentially belgin and french comics but you can probably provide them
